Pickin in the Garden

Herbs have arrived

It’s time for Nashville to start planting herbs. Some people don’t know that many herbs are perennials, meaning they come back year after year. There are some exceptions. For example, parsley lasts for two years and must be replanted in the third year. Basil, on the other hand, must be planted every year.

But there is nothing like going into your own backyard and picking your own fresh cooking ingredients.

Don’t have a good place in your backyard? Some herbs blend rather well into the landscape in your front yard. Try planting basil and parsley among your favorite flowers beds for greenery and, best of all, food outside your own door.

Time to Trim the Knockout Roses

We know you’re itching for something to do in the garden, even though it’s a little early.  One thing that you can get started on is trimming back your knockout roses.

One of the best things about knockout roses is how easy they are to care for. Knockout roses are bush or shrub roses of single petal varieties. Double knockout roses are fuller and more closely resemble the stem rose. Pruning dead or damaged stems can be done at any time of year.

In fact, you should trim away deadwood whenever you see it. If you are pruning to control the shape, wait until the second season of growth. After that, you may only need to prune every three years or whenever you want to shape the rose.

Rose pruning should be done just as buds break dormancy…probably around late February or early March. When buds have swelled but no new growth has yet appeared, it is the ideal time to prune bush or shrub type roses. Knockout roses provide several months of colorful blooms, as they bloom about every five to six weeks during the growing season (spring to frost). They are full grown at about 4 feet high and 4 feet wide Remember that Knockouts grow vigorously, so trim them down two feet below the height you want them to reach during the growing season. If you find that your rose bush has become too large and unruly, you can cut the entire bush down to about 1 or 2 feet high in the spring.

Don’t have any knockout roses yet?  Don’t worry. JVI Secret Gardens always carries them and we’re opening back up for spring soon….
